College Football Player Props Picks: Week 8
Photo: AL DIAZ ([email protected])
Boy oh boy, is there any way this weekend of college football can top last weekend? Don't get me wrong. I know not every weekend will be like Week 7, but man was last weekend FUN!
Yes, there aren't the same type of "marquee matchups" this weekend compared to last weekend. However, there are still some good games with some spots to target in terms of player props.
Here's some of the players props I'm looking at targeting this weekend:
Malachi Toney Over 104.5 Receiving Yards (-114 FanDuel)
Malachi Toney is making a case to be one of the top rated wide receiver prospect in the 2028 NFL Draft. The dude is ballin' right now in his sophomore season. So far, he's racked up 758 receiving yards on 50 receptions this season.
Usually, I'd say a line this large would be a tall order for many wide receivers against defensive of Pitt's caliber. However, Toney is on a WHOLE OTHER level. He's is HIM. He's hit this mark in four of his six games this season and was nine receiving yards shy of hitting it in five of his six games.
Pitt's defense is not the best when it comes to opposing wide receiver yards, but opposing receivers aren't recording 100+ yards against them regularly. There's only been two teams (Boston College and Virginia Tech) who have had a wide receiver record not only 100+ receiving yards, but over 120+ receiving yards.
Pitt hasn't seen a wide receiver better than Toney so far this season. Also, Darian Mensah will be the best quarterback Pitt's defense will have seen so far this season as well.
Usually, I'd say this is a tall task, but I have faith in the Hurricanes and Toney this Saturday.
Darian Mensah 3+ Passing Touchdowns (+164 FanDuel)
I've already mentioned how Darian Mensah will be the best quarterback Pitt has seen this season. Thus far, Mensah is putting up a resume good enough to win the Heisman Award. His touchdown to interception ratio is VERY impressive thus far. He's tossed 18 touchdowns and only one interception. 18 to 1?!?!!? That's insane!!!!!
He's a passing touchdown machine this season (obviously!). The Clemson game was the only time this season were he didn't throw 3+ touchdowns in the game. If you're asking me, the Clemson defense is a better defense with more draft prospects than the Pitt defense.
The Pitt defense has only allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for 3+ touchdowns in a game only once in their last five games (Virginia Tech). There have been two more games where opposing quarterbacks have tossed 2+ touchdowns in a game (UNC and Boston College).
Like I said thought, Mensah will be the best quarterback Pitt faces all season. He's playing at a Heisman-like level and should add another 3+ passing touchdown game to his resume.
KJ Duff Over 6.5 Receptions (-114 FanDuel)
If this is your first time visiting MVP, I'm a HUGE fan of KJ Duff. He is easily my favorite wide receiver in the 2027 NFL Draft. Although Rutgers has a losing record, he is playing like an absolute star this season.
When it comes to receptions, he caught 42 passes this season through six games, averaging 7 receptions per game. He is the Scarlet Knights' top receiving option and there's not another wide receiver on the team that comes close to his catches.
Northwestern will not be a push over defensive, but they could be susceptible to someone of Duff's caliber. In their last five games, the Wildcats defense have given up 7+ receptions to an opposing wide receiver in three of their last five games. In fact, one of those wide receivers is Indiana's Charlie Becker who is also a highly touted draft prospect. If he can rack up 7+ receptions against Northwestern, then it should be a "easy day at the office" for KJ Duff.
The one thing I hate about this is that because I live in Illinois that I CANNOT bet on this play because the state of Illinois is dumb and won't let it's residents wager on games with schools from Illinois.
Mike Matthews Over 3.5 Receptions (-148 FanDuel)
This may be my favorite prop from this entire write-up. Yes, the line is low. However, I'm so confident in this prop that I'd feel fine playing it at a 1.5 unit risk as low as -150.
Mike Matthews isn't getting the same rub as Jeremiah Smith (duh!), Charlie Becker, Nick Marsh, or KJ Duff (that last one's for me!). However, he's been a very reliable option for the Volunteers this season! Through seven games this season, he's caught 29 passes from quarterback Faizon Brandon, averaging around 4+ catches per game. He's only failed to catch four passes in a single game thus far against Georgia Tech. His most catches came in last week's win over Alabama where he caught seven balls.
South Carolina defensively is NOT good against receptions for opposing wide receivers. There has been at least one opposing wide receiver in each of South Carolina's last five games with 4+ receptions in the game.
I feel like Matthews may be able to rack up MORE than just four receptions in the games.
Junior Sherrill Over 79.5 Receiving Yards (-113 Caesars)
The wide receiver props continue this week! It seems like the receivers are the dudes I love this weekend, huh?
Just like the Matthews prop, Vanderbilt's opponent this weekend ,Kentucky, is NOT good in terms of limiting opposing wide receivers receiving yards. They've allowed at least one opposing wide receiver to record 80+ receiving yards for the game in every single one of their last five games.
Also, just like Matthews, Junior Sherrill isn't a highly touted prospect in the draft, but has the ability to hit this mark on Saturday night. Not only have he hit this mark in five of seven games this season, he's recorded 90+ receiving yards in that same span.
It's really intriguing for a little ladder situation here for 90+ yards on top of this play. Right now, his 90+ receiving yards line is +140 on Draft Kings. If you want to be safe, playing this line. If you're bold, play this line up to 90+ yards for the game!
